Spring Tips For Preventing Ants

Pavement ants are easily one of the biggest nuisances during the spring and summer months. From your kitchen and pantry to your patio and grill, these little black insects are making themselves right at home. So what can you do to prevent ants this year? Here are our top picks for ways to prevent ants in 2020.

Cleanliness

Easily the biggest way to prevent ants is by maintaining a clean home and yard. Leaving food out on the counter top for too long will attract ants like kids to a candy shop. To prevent this, simply seal all leftovers in airtight containers and take out the trash every other day, depending on your household. We also suggest cleaning off counter tops with disinfectant after every meal to prevent any food residue from attracting ants to your kitchen and dining room.

Another helpful tip is to vacuum on a regular basis. Crumbs and other food particles can be easily missed in between the couch cushions and in the carpet, attracting ants to these sources of food. Be sure to vacuum thoroughly and to mop hardwood and tile floors regularly.

Sealable Containers

There is an abundance of options when it comes to sealable containers. One suggestion to help prevent ants from getting into your pantry is taking commonly used goods like cereal and storing them in airtight, sealable, reusable containers. These types of containers can last a lifetime and make a huge difference in the cleanliness of your pantry and help prevent ants from getting into things they shouldn’t.

Disrupt Their Trails

As you may already know, ants travel in lines, going from their food source back to the colony. One great way to prevent these ants from continuing their work is by disturbing their pheromone trail. We suggest combining 1 part vinegar and 3 parts water into a spray bottle, then spraying any ant trails you’ve noticed. This will prevent the ants from finding the pheromone trail, preventing the ants from continuing beyond that point.

Seal off windows and doors where possible.

The last do it yourself suggestion if you are still seeing ants is to seal off any possible entrances where the ants may be getting in. You can take caulk and reseal windows and door frames. You can also purchase door skirts from Amazon or home depot to prevent ants from walking under the door into your home. Most door skirts can be cut to size and are easy to instal, requiring minimal to no tools.
