Gnat Control in New England
Source-Focused Gnat Control for Homes & Commercial Properties
Persistent gnats around houseplants, kitchens, bathrooms, drains, entryways, or damp outdoor areas often signal an active breeding source. At Pest Assassins, we provide residential and commercial gnat control throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts, including Providence, Newton, and Worcester.
We’ve served homeowners and commercial property managers since 2016. Licensed in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, our technicians address visible adults while looking for the soil, moisture, food debris, or decaying matter allowing the activity to continue.
Request a free gnat control estimate by calling (877) 665-2667. Same-day service is available when timing matters.
How Can We Help You?
Put a Stop to Your Pests
Our Gnat Inspection & Treatment Process
We begin by inspecting where gnats appear and the conditions that may be supporting them. We evaluate likely sources such as damp houseplant soil, spills, organic buildup, pooled water, and other moisture-prone areas.
We use Integrated Pest Management, which combines inspection, source correction, sanitation, moisture control, and appropriate treatment measures. The resulting plan addresses the identified breeding source and the areas where adult gnats remain active.
What to expect from our service:
- Free Estimate: We provide an estimate before you decide how to proceed.
- Contract-Free Service: Our pest control doesn’t require a long-term commitment, and customers can cancel anytime.
- Follow-Up Guidance: We explain any follow-up needs based on the gnat type, breeding source, and conditions at the property.
Enjoy peace of mind with our flexible recurring service. Get expert pest control every quarter, without the commitment of a contract. You can cancel anytime, but we’re confident you’ll love the results!
Common Gnat Types & Their Breeding Sources
Small flying insects commonly grouped as gnats don’t all develop in the same places. Correct identification helps determine whether the source is plant soil, exposed food, a drain, or an outdoor breeding area.
Fungus Gnats
Fungus gnats are the most common species associated with gnat infestations in New England. Adults are slender, dark gray or black, and about one-eighth of an inch long. They often gather near indoor plants, damp areas, and entryways, while their larvae live just below the soil surface and look like small translucent worms with dark heads.
Fruit Flies
Fruit flies are associated with exposed produce, food residue, and fermenting organic material. Finding and removing the material supporting them is essential to addressing persistent activity.
Drain-Related Flies
Drain flies can develop where moisture and buildup collect inside or around drains. Repeated insects near sinks or bathrooms may indicate a source beyond the adults visible in the room.
Biting Gnats
Outdoor activity may involve biting gnats rather than plant-associated, fruit, or drain-related flies. An evaluation can identify where the insects are coming from and which conditions should be addressed.

Ways to Reduce Gnat Breeding Conditions
Moisture control and routine sanitation can make indoor and outdoor areas less supportive of gnat activity. Focus on the conditions around plants, drains, food, waste, and pooled water.
Practical steps include:
- Fix leaky faucets, eliminate standing water, and improve drainage where moisture collects.
- Avoid overwatering houseplants or leaving soil continually saturated.
- Cover trash bins and remove produce waste, spills, and leftovers.
- Carefully pour boiling water down sinks to help wash away buildup associated with drain-related gnats.
- Keep kitchens, bathrooms, drains, and plant areas as dry and clean as practical.
